36-31, uh oh.
John McCain, perhaps debating whether or not to offer soon-to-be former candidate Rudy Giuliani some post on his team, defeated Mitt Romney for the second time Tuesday night and complicated the Mittster's Super Tuesday odds. Meanwhile, a beaming Hillary Clinton trounced Barack Obama by nearly twenty points, despite receiving no delegates (yet).
The coverage of her adopted hometown rag, however, might disappoint the Sexy Senator: all of the headlines are going to the victorious Mad Mac and the humbled Hizzoner.
JMM holds out some hope for a Mittmentum revival (Robo-Rom's advantage among conservatives remains significant), but he probably needs the Huckster to drop out too. FWIW, Senator McCain would not need "105% of the base" either. As usual, the top blogger nails it.
Here is the word from a key Republican blog.
So, for all intents and purposes, we have reached the Final Four in the Road to the US Presidency, 2009. HRC and Mad Mac enter as #1 seeds, Romney and Obama #2s. Mike Huckabee and John Edwards linger, but only the former has the potential to influence primaries next week. Again, I admit my error with Rudy Giuliani, but I think to argue, as Jeffrey Toobin did in his bombastic, preening style that "Giuliani ran the worst campaign of the millennium" is absurd. John McCain's comeback outflanked the mayor on national security and cultural issues, plus the all-important immigration issue vanished from view. If Senator McCain wins the White House, Harry Reid is going to rue not putting immigration reform front-and-center at a time when it could have killed a McCain bid.
Democrats are getting a trifle nervous... as well they should.
